I posted a “Lutheran Sermon” from last Father’s Day, and if you simply read my intro but did not listen to the sermon, you might have been led to believe that I had a low regard for exhorting fathers to step up to the plate and fulfill their duties. Not so. It’s just that, as a Lutheran, the pulpit should be used for one thing only – preaching. And preaching in the Lutheran church is a proper balance of God’s law – to show us our sin, and the Gospel, to tell us we are forgiven from that sin. The pulpit is not a place from which we are told to tray harder. We are fallen and totally depraved.

So a sermon which preaches about the importance of dads, in all likelihood, just wouldn’t accomplish that. The sermon should be about the importance of Christ and how that relates to the sinful state of dads (and all of us). It is crucial that fathers have a proper understanding of their own sinful state/desires, as well as the forgiveness given to them, so they can pass these truths along to their children.

Having said all that, here are some recent discussions concerning fathers from one of my favorite websites/radio talk shows – Issues, Etc.
